When we’re creating new spaces, homes, Airbnb’s, hotels, cafes ~ I’m sure you’ll agree that we all want to be part of the solution, not the problem. Yet, what does that even look like in real life? How do we make more environmentally conscious choices from the first sketch all the way through to the final styling and landscaping?
Here’s a sobering fact:
We generate over 2 billion tons of solid waste every year.
Australia alone sends around 20 million tonnes of that to landfill annually.
So how do we flip that script and build beautiful, thoughtful spaces without trashing the planet in the process? Here’s one designer who’s been showing us the way...
ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:: MAX LAMB
Max Lamb had me at molten metal.
I stumbled across a YouTube clip in 2014 of this British designer pouring molten pewter into a hole he’d dug in the sand to make a stool. It was raw, experimental, and quite mesmerizing.
Max is all about material honesty and process. He digs, carves, casts, and burns, uncovering the natural beauty of his materials through traditional techniques mixed with modern tech. His furniture feels like sculpture—but it’s also super functional and durable. Form and function.
